Programs and Curriculum
At Southside Child Development Center, our mission is to provide a culturally and linguistically appropriate child care that meets the needs of each child and family in a safe, educational environment. We pride our Center’s focus on the individual needs of each child, while providing quality, reliable, and safe child care that leads to school readiness and educational success.
- To provide affordable, convenient, dependable child care services.
- To create a child care setting for social, cognitive and physical development.
- To provide a nurturing environment.
- To ready children for Kindergarten and beyond.
Communication with Parents
Every day, you will receive a written, detailed account of your child’s schedule, activities, and development. This open communication is ongoing throughout your child’s day care experience.
Meals will consist of breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. Children who arrive after meal times should be fed before they arrive. Parents of infants will need to supply all formula and baby food. If your child has allergies, and requires a special diet, then you will need to provide what your child is going to eat. Our menu will be posted on the front door Monday morning and if there are things on there your child can eat let us know which ones and you will need to supply anything else your child will require to eat.
Breakfast 8:00 A.M.
Lunch 11:30 P.M.
Snack 3:30 P.M.
Throughout the year we take many field trips. Parents are welcome to join us anytime, but are not required to.
We try to plan a daily schedule. It lets the children know what to expect from day to day. But where we do have a lot of young children, toddlers and babies it is not always possible to follow a strict schedule. We try to follow our routine to the best of our ability. But if the children are having a really good time outside then we are not going to rush them in just because it’s now time to do projects. If weather is nice outside and the children are having fun outside we may do our program outside during warm weather instead of being cooped up inside most of the day. Visit our Activities page for a sample daily schedule at Southside Child Development Center.
Celebrating Holidays offers many opportunities for fun, excitement and connection, and for meaningful learning about similarities and differences, important aspects of SCDC’s anti-bias approach. We have a rich variety of cultures in our community, and our families celebrate holidays in many different ways. SCDC will be closed on the following holidays:
- Thanksgiving Day
- Friday after Thanksgiving
- Christmas Eve
- Christmas Day
- New Year’s Day
- Eid Days (TBD)
- Independence Day
- Martin Luther King Day
- Memorial Day
- Labor Day
- Presidents day
Southside Child Development Center will close for weather related reasons whenever the Minneapolis Public Schools close, or in extreme cases at the Director’s discretion. If the Minneapolis Public Schools list no afternoon activities, then we will close at 4:00 PM, if there is a two hour delay, we will open at 10:00 AM.
We like to see happy and active children in our center. Children wouldn’t be normal if they didn’t have their ups and downs. Especially toddlers, who are not old enough to communicate, sometimes have a hard time with their emotions. Sometimes they hit or throw toys, etc. Using positive language, redirection, and time outs we will be trying to teach children with a positive approach on how to get along with their friends.
If a child is running inside, we would say “Please Walk Ryan.” “Thank you.”
If a child is standing on a chair, we would say “Mohamed can you please sit on the chair.” “Thank you.”
Late Pick Up
Overtime starts at 4 pm for the first shift. Late fees will be assessed for *$1.00 for every 5 minutes late starting at 4:00 p.m. Please make sure your child is picked up by 9:00 pm or a late fee will be charged.
Open Door Policy
Our daycare does maintain an open door policy for you to stop in and check on your child at anytime. Open door policy means that you may stop by at any time it doesn’t mean the door will not be locked. If you decide to stop by please remember we do go outside daily and if we decide to go off for a walk on the carriage roads we may not be available when you come by. So you may want to call on your way over to make sure we are here. We try to do daily outings and go to the play ground during nice weather. If you stop by and we are not in the center please check our front desk, we usually have a note where we can be found.
Please keep in mind that most young children are used to a certain routine and when they see mommy come through the door they are going to think it’s time to go home. And when you leave without them they are going to be pretty upset. Also please keep in mind that your own child may tend to act up because you are present and that is very normal behavior, so don’t be alarmed.
